Learning from Friends

Surround yourself with people who, by nature, are different than you. I love challenging myself to find friends who are innately different from me. Some of my friends homeschool and some send their kids to public school. Some of my friends are conservative and some are liberals. Some of my friends currently rely on government assistance while others do not. I have learned, and continue to learn so much from these friends.

Why do this?

One day I realized, Jesus had 12 disciples.

No think about it.

God came down and took the form of man. God did this. Why would he need 12 friends to do ministry with him? He is God- in the flesh.

What makes it better? Jesus didn’t just pick conservatives, homeschoolers, shepherds, or fishermen to follow him. Jesus chose a variety of people to follow him. Some had great reputations, some had questionable ones. Some were married and some were not. The only thing they had in common was that they wanted to follow Christ.

What can I learn from that?

To me, life is not about always being right. Life is about learning to love, serve, and be more like Jesus.  It is challenging to have friends who are different than me but… that is the point. I have learned so much from all my amazing friends. Jesus chose to surround himself with people who were nothing like him. So should I. The only thing I look for when it comes to my close friends is- do they want to follow Christ. Beyond that- its meaningless.

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?
2 Corinthians 6:14 (NIV)
