A Day in the Mud

For Madi’s Birthday a good friend of ours gave her a

Mud kitchen

For Madi, this was one of the greatest gifts. She has been outside everyday cooking yummy meals in the mud. It has been fun seeing what she and her brother cook up. The other day it hit me…. teachable moment!!!

Playing with mud is not only a great way to give our kids freedom with their imaginations but it is a great way to teach them about sin!
Using mud play to explain sin to a toddler: (Don’t expect anything profound here folks. Just trying to build a foundation of simple truths in these kids.)
  • What is sin? bad choices we make (give examples)
  • When we make bad choices, the Bible says it makes us “unclean” kind of like when we play in the mud.
  • When we are covered in muddy, yucky sin, can we be near to God? no.
  • Uh oh!
  • Did you know that Jesus can make us clean again?
  • The Bible promises that when we believe in Jesus and are baptized to be his followers, then Jesus washes away our yucky dirty sins!
  • Because of Jesus we can be clean! Because of Jesus’ we can be with God!

Have fun getting cleaned off! In our house, the kids run around in the sprinkler or run away from Mommy who has the hose. 😉

When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive – right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ’s Cross. Colossians 2:13-14 (The Message)
